INTERDISCIPLINARY PRACTICES IN BIO ART

From anatomical studies to landscape painting to the biomorphism of surrealism, the biological realm historically provided a significant resource for numerous artists. More recently, bio art has become a term referring to intersecting domains of the biological sciences and their incorporation into the plastic arts. Of particular importance in bio art is to summon awareness of the ways in which biomedical sciences alter social, ethical and cultural values in society.

Coming to the fore in the early 1990s, bio art is neither media specific nor locally bounded. It is an international movement with practitioners in such regions as Europe, the U.S., Russia, Asia, Australia and the Americas. Several sub-genres of bio art exist within this overarching term:

1) Artists who employ the iconography of the 20th- and 21st-century sciences, including molecular and cellular genetics, transgenically altered living matter, reproductive technologies and neurosciences. All traditional media, including painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing are employed to convey novel ways of representing life forms.

2) Artists who utilize computer software, systems theory and simulations to investigate aspects of the biological sciences such as evolution, artificial life and robotics through digital sculpture and new media installations.

3) Artists employing biological matter itself as their medium, including processes such as tissue engineering, plant breeding, transgenics and ecological reclamation.

This interdisciplinary residency will take place in the new Fine Arts Nature and Technology Laboratory located in the heart of New York City's Chelsea gallery district. Participants will have access to all of the facilities. Each student will be assigned an individual workstation. In addition, the Nature and Technology Lab houses microscopes for photo and video, skeleton collections, specimen collections, slide collections, an herbarium and aquarium as well as a library.

Demonstrations include microscopy, plant tissue engineering, molecular cuisine and the production of micro eco-systems. Field trips and visiting speakers will include artists, scientists and museum professionals. Students may work in any media, including the performing arts. 

The Residency will be led by artist Suzanne Anker, Chair of the BFA Fine Arts Department at SVA, and Brandon Ballengée, bio-artist. In addition, visiting speakers will include artists, scientists and museum professionals including Mark Bridgen, Kathy High, James Walsh and Jennifer Willet.

El tema de la naturaleza y el arte se ha explorado desde varias estrategias metodológicas que derivan en instalaciones tan interesantes que muchas veces se trata de máquinas, engranajes y experimentos en los que las máquinas funcionan, tal vez en el borde de la inutilidad, en la pregunta por lo vivo, por la vida, por el hálito de aquello que respira.

Diversidad de conceptos biológicos como la autopoiesis, la mitosis, la célula pueden ser explicados desde el arte como una estrategia para abrirnos a maneras no tradicionales de enseñar la biología que crean otras dinámicas en las que los estudiantes buscan formas creativas para interiorizar un concepto abstracto a través de propuestas lúdicas, artísticas, estéticas.

Molecular Invasion es un proyecto del Critical Art Ensemble que busca realizar acciones contestatarias en relacion con los OMG. 




Thus, Roundup kills by literally starving the plants that it attacks. However, Roundup Ready plants have been genetically modified to produce a version of the enzyme EPSP synthase that protects the plants. This version of EPSP synthase is a natural enzyme found in some bacteria and does not bind glyphosate very well. By genetically modifying the target plant to overproduce the resistant enzyme, the GMO producers insured that the RR plants are immune to the effects of glyphosate. Using pro-drug theory as a model, it may be possible to produce a biochemical intervention that could either specifically inhibit the resistant EPSP synthase that is present in the GMOs, or one that could set off a cascade of physiological effects that could retard or mutate the plant. Precise targeting is very difficult to do. Much like advanced electronic hacking, genetic hacking and reverse engineering are very specialized tactics. This is why corporations do not at present fear reverse engineering. The GMO revolution has been bloodless, because resistance does not have the capital to mount a counter-offensive on the molecular level. Much like fighting nomadic (virtual) power with nomadic tactics, the current molecular invasion has to be confronted in the molecular theater of operations. For the resistance to progress on any credible, effective level, rebel labs and rogue human resources in molecular biology have to be developed.

Esta es la última exposición de Oron Catts e Iona Zurr en Polonia en 2012. Lo interesante de esta muestra es que es la primera que muestra una retrospectiva de su trabajo y de objetos semi-vivos.

Una relación particular entre el arte y la ciencia ha comenzado desde hace varias décadas, propiciada por el desarrollo de los campos de la biotecnología y el arte.

Quizá el trabajo artístico más mediático, ha sido el caso de la coneja transgénica Alba, sin embargo, no es el único trabajo. La transformación de mariposas ¿on nature? En 2000 de Marta de Menezes, la propuesta de Sterlac con la creación del trabajo “la tercera oreja” del 2006, la modificación estética en Orlan, los trabajos del colectivo "The tissue culture and art project" integrado por Oron Cats e Ionat Zurr, son apenas algunos ejemplos.

Existen muchos aspectos interesantes para reflexionar de una manera crítica sobre esta nueva relación.
El bioarte plantea al menos tres aspectos para abrir una discusión. Por un lado, estaría la actividad del artista que lleva a cabo procedimientos científicos para realizar sus obras, en este sentido el artista tiene una responsabilidad  ética que precisamente está en discusión.   Por otro lado, estaríamos refiriéndonos a los problemas que surgen con las dicotomías involucradas,en particular la transgresión de la dicotomía clásica natural/artificial.  Un último aspecto tendría que ver con discusión sobre  la necesidad o no de los laboratorios como espacios donde se realizan los trabajos artísticos.
Estos y otros temas son los que en este blog ponen a consideración al mostrar los distintos artistas que realizan trabajos entre el arte y la biología.
